A Mother's Journey to a Safe Home

When the floor began to sag and mold crept into the corners of her home, Yasheka faced a decision no parent should ever have to make, continue living in unsafe conditions, or risk losing the only home her children have ever known.

A single mother of four in Supply, NC, Yasheka works hard to support her family. She holds a steady job to help cover basic expenses, but the cost of major home repairs, like fixing the plumbing, replacing the heating and air unit, and repairing storm-damaged underpinning was far beyond her reach.

"I knew I had to do something," she wrote in her application to WARM NC. "I feel like I don't want to lose something I worked hard for my kids to have. I'm hoping to have a comfortable home for me and my kids to love and enjoy."

Her words speak volumes, not only about her personal determination but also about a broader crisis facing families in our region. In North Carolina, nearly 40% of single mothers and their children live below the poverty line. In Brunswick County, 13.1% of children live in poverty, and 5.4% of households are headed by single parents without a spouse present. These statistics reflect more than numbers, they represent mothers like Yasheka, fighting to protect what they've built in the face of economic hardship.

Believing that safe housing should never be out of reach, WARM NC will mobilize volunteers and resources to make critical repairs to Yasheka's home. The heating and air system will finally be replaced. Mild and moisture issues will be addressed. Her children will no longer have to navigate unsafe floors or sleep in unsafe conditions.

As we reflect on the families we've served, Yasheka's story stands out as a testament to resilience. Her strength mirrors that of so many single mothers in our community, working hard, sacrificing daily, and doing their best with limited resources.
