William has done his best to try and keep up with the maintenance on his home, but at 76-years-old it has become nearly impossible. The retired Navy veteran has cherished this home with his wife Elizabeth for nearly 50 years. Once a devoted part-time pastor at a local Methodist church in Burgaw, he first heard about WARM NC through his congregation.
The old carpet in the living room, bedroom, and hallway desperately needed replacing with vinyl to ease Elizabeth's struggle with COPD. There were soft spots in the floor from a leaking roof and the deck boards needed to be replaced. Elizabeth, reliant on a walker and oxygen 24/7, dreamt of a ramp for their front porch.
William's congregation rallied around them, eager to restore safety and comfort to their beloved home. Joined by WARM's dedicated construction team, volunteers set to work on building that crucial ramp. But thanks to an Essential Single Family Rehabilitation (ESFR) grant WARM was able to do much more than that. The team also repaired the kitchen floor, replaced the carpet with vinyl flooring, installed four smoke detectors, repaired their doors and windows and installed a new HVAC system.
William and Elizabeth can now rest and breathe easily for years to come.
