Small Repairs, Lasting Comfort

In Brunswick County, Linda and her husband James have spent years building a life inside the home they love. It is a home filled with warmth, generosity, and the kind of hospitality that makes visitors feel like family the moment they walk through the door.

Whether it was homemade pie cooling on the counter, fresh vegetables from the garden, or offering a snack and something cold to drink, Linda and James always found ways to care for the people around them.

For many years, James handled repairs on the home himself. Having worked as a roofer, he took pride in maintaining the place where they built their life together. But over time, both Linda and James began facing challenges that made it harder to safely keep up with the repairs their aging home needed.

“The older you get, the harder it is,” Linda shared. “We used to do a lot ourselves.”

As repairs became more difficult to manage, safety concerns throughout the home continued to grow. Flooring had softened in places, bathrooms needed repairs, and everyday tasks became harder to navigate safely.

When WARM NC volunteers and staff arrived, they brought more than construction materials. They brought reassurance and relief.

Over several weeks, repairs were completed throughout the home, including flooring repairs, bathroom updates, accessibility improvements, new storm doors, crawl space ventilation, landscaping cleanup, electrical work, and ramp improvements.

One moment especially stood out to Linda, the installation of a new kitchen door with a window that allowed more light into the house.

“She loved it because it made the kitchen brighter,” one volunteer shared.

It was clear that every repair, big or small, helped make daily life a little easier and brought renewed comfort to a home that means so much to Linda and James.

Their gratitude never went unnoticed. Even while receiving help themselves, Linda and James constantly looked for ways to care for others, making lunch for volunteers, sharing stories, and offering kindness at every opportunity.

For Linda and James, these repairs mean more than updated flooring or safer entrances. They mean being able to continue living in the home they cherish, surrounded by memories, neighbors, and the life they built together over many years.

Thanks to the support of volunteers, donors, and community partners, homeowners like Linda and James can continue aging safely and comfortably in the place they call home.
