My mental health improved

Martha worked in childcare for more than 20 years and says she loved helping the children and improving their behavior. In 2020, she bought a home she loved. But a couple years later, cracks in the bathroom shower caused water damage to her floors resulting in mold and mildew.


“It was inconvenient because my shower had the handicap rails that helped me more, but I had to use the other bathroom,” Martha says. Since she was on a fixed income, she couldn’t afford the necessary repairs to the bathroom or an accessibility upgrade to the one bathroom that was functional.


Hesitant to apply for services because she had been turned down multiple times by other organizations, she filled out a WARM NC application anyway. She says she was so happy when she heard she was approved.


Once the WARM NC construction staff made the repairs Martha says her mental health improved and she is so grateful to be “taking it easy and enjoying life.” Her favorite thing to do in her home is clean and sit on her porch. Martha is now referring other friends and neighbors because she says other people like her need help.
