7 Spring Home Maintenance Tips

Updated: Mar 21

Proper maintenance of your home is key to making sure little problems don’t turn into major problems down the road. Here are 7 things you can do this spring to keep your home properly maintained.

Clean and Inspect Gutters and Downspouts

Make sure your gutters are free of leaves, twigs, and other debris. Clogged gutters and downspouts can cause wood trim to rot, inviting all kinds of critters into your attic space. Make sure the downspouts are installed properly so that water is diverted away from your home, and does not collect around your foundation, which can cause damage over time.

Reseal Exterior Woodwork

Outdoor wooden structures like decks and railings will last longer if they’re stained or resealed every year or two. You can also take this time to make any needed repairs to woodwork. Check for any stray nails, wood chips, or rotten boards.

Check for Termites

Termites swarm in the spring so be on the lookout. If you notice a large group of winged bugs flying out of a hole in your home, call a licensed pest control professional for expertise and guidance.

Inspect the Roof

Look for missing shingles, metal pipes that are damaged or missing, or anything that just doesn’t look right. Flashing around plumbing vents, skylights, and chimneys should also be checked. If anything looks damaged, call a roofer.

Check Screen Doors and Windows

Screens are great for letting in the breeze without letting in pesky bugs. Make sure screens are free from holes and tears. If you find any, screen repair kits are available at most hardware and home improvement stores.

Recaulk Windows and Doors

If necessary, caulk around your home’s windows and doors to keep out heat and humidity. Check that any weather stripping is in good condition and replace if needed. Keeping your home properly sealed will save money on your utility bills all year long.

Schedule HVAC Service

To get the longest life out of your HVAC system, have it inspected and maintained at least annually. A professional will make sure your system is working efficiently and make sure you change your filter on a regular basis.
