The story of Clara

Clara is a 68 year old woman whose husband passed away 10 years ago. While she made the home comfortable, as the house handyman, he made sure it stayed together. Her roof began leaking 2 years ago and now whenever it rains, the rain comes in through the falling ceiling and even through the light fixtures. The electricity cannot be used for fear of shock or worse. The carpet which takes weeks to dry has caused mold to begin to grow beneath it and along the walls. Clara has lived in this house for over 30 years, this is where she and her husband raised their children, this is where her life is. Her Social Security income will not afford her the ability to pay for the much needed repairs. Her home may become condemned. What can she do? Who can she turn to?

Clara is just one of the many types of individuals who turn to WARM for assistance on a regular basis. Over the years, WARM has received applications from and provided home repairs to countless individuals and families so that they may return to living their lives in the comfort of their own homes. Over 80% of WARM homeowners are widows and over 30% are disabled.

WARM, Inc. has only 3 requirements for the homeowner. They must:
  • Reside in Brunswick, New Hanover, or Pender County.
  • Own and occupy the home in need of repairs.
  • Fall at or below 50% of their county’s median income.

It is important to understand that meeting these requirements does not guarantee approval of the project. Our personnel will determine if the project falls within the scope of WARM, Inc.’s mission and capabilities. Due to limited resources, we cannot help everyone who is eligible. Highest priority will be given to those with the greatest need.
